Post-Root Canal Tips

While we at Booker Family Dentistry make every effort to keep our procedures as comfortable, pain-free and minimally invasive as possible, the truth is that root canals are surgery and you will want to prepare in advance for your recovery. Thankfully, the recovery doesn't have to be that bad. You'll just want to follow these four tips once you leave your Trenton cosmetic dentist.

1. Be Prepared for Some Pain and Discomfort

A little bit of pain or soreness after a root canal is normal and to be expected. Prepare for this pain by purchasing the pain relievers you'll need ahead of time, so you'll already have them on hand. An over-the-counter pain reliever should be enough to knock out the majority of the pain. An ice pack can help with any swelling too.

2. Stick to Soft Foods Until Tenderness is Gone

Eating hard or crunchy foods isn't just a good way to cause yourself pain; it's also a great way to fracture your new crown as well. Once your tenderness is gone and everything has settled, you'll be able to enjoy all of your favorite foods again. For the first few days, however, you'll want to eat only soft foods and avoid chewing with the treated side as much as possible.

3. Brush and Floss Regularly

Oral HealthBrushing and flossing are always important and the time right after you visit your Trenton cosmetic dentist for a root canal is no exception. If brushing hurts or is uncomfortable, you can purchase a soft toothbrush and brush slowly, but don't skip brushing or flossing altogether.

4. Call with Questions or Concerns

While the vast majority of root canals performed by cosmetic dentists in Trenton go very well, complications have been known to happen. If something ever doesn't feel right or if you have a great deal of pain, a reaction, a question or a concern, call Booker Family Dentistry right away. We're here to serve you--even after your root canal is over--and we'd rather you call than risk ruining your beautiful new smile.
